About SketchDeck.ai
SketchDeck.ai builds SketchDeck (formerly LIFT), AI takeoff software for structural steel fabricators and erectors. SketchDeck reads 2D construction drawings and does the manual counting and measuring, then exports the bill of materials to the systems shops already use. 500+ estimators use SketchDeck to build hospitals, stadiums and data centers.
We’re a team of about 30 people, headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, with an office in Atlanta, Georgia.
The role
We’re hiring a Business Development Representative to open new conversations with steel fabricators and turn the right ones into meetings for our Account Executives. Most of your week goes to outbound: finding the shops that fit, reaching the people who run estimating, and earning a first meeting. You’ll also qualify some inbound demo requests, but outbound is the job.
The people you’ll talk to know their trade deeply. Many have done takeoffs by hand for decades and are wary of software that promises too much. You’ll earn their time by asking good questions about their shop and listening to the answers. You’ll work closely with sales, marketing and customer success, and what you hear on calls will shape how we sell and what we build.
What you’ll do
Outbound prospecting
- Research target fabricators and erectors across North America and map who estimates, who manages estimating and who signs
- Run multi-touch outreach across phone, email and LinkedIn, using Apollo sequences and your own notes
- Make cold calls every day. The phone is where most first meetings come from
- Write short, personal messages built on what you learned about each shop
- Follow up with past contacts and event leads, including people we met at trade shows
- Work trade shows and regional steel events, meeting people at the booth and walking qualified prospects to an Account Executive
- Help us test messaging, call scripts and sequences, and tell us what isn’t working
Inbound support
- Call new demo requests quickly, confirm the shop is a fit, and book them with an Account Executive
Across both
- Keep HubSpot accurate: contacts, activity, lead status and the reasons a lead did or didn’t move forward
- Share what you hear on calls, such as objections, timing signals and competitor mentions, with sales, marketing and product
What you bring
You don’t need years of sales experience. We care more about how you work than what’s on your resume.
- Comfort picking up the phone and calling people who aren’t expecting you, many times a day
- Resilience: you hear “no” often and keep going
- Clear, concise writing. Your emails sound like a person wrote them
- Curiosity about how a business runs, and the patience to listen before you pitch
- Organized follow-through: you track every lead and next step without being reminded
- Willingness to travel a few times a year for industry events
Nice to have
- Any SDR, BDR or other sales experience
- Experience with HubSpot, Apollo or similar tools
- Familiarity with construction, steel fabrication, manufacturing or the trades
- Early-stage startup experience, where you helped build the process rather than inherit it
How we’ll measure success
| Timeframe | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| First 15 days | Learn how steel estimating works and who our buyers are; shadow calls and demos; build your first target account lists |
| First 30 days | Launch your own outbound sequences; make cold calls daily; book your first qualified outbound meetings |
| First 45 days | Hit a steady weekly pace of outbound meetings; keep HubSpot clean enough that the team can trust your pipeline; share a written view of what’s working in our outreach |
Ongoing, you’ll be measured on qualified outbound meetings held, pipeline created, and the share of your meetings that Account Executives accept as qualified.
